Mermaids in the bay
We wanted ‘glimpses’. Mythical, modern day magic. So that, as you walked along Portstewart Strand, or climbed across the causeway, you might see a flash of a shimmering tail, maybe two creatures playfully breaking the water surface in the corner of your eye, a distant echo of laughter somewhere out in the waves.
We finally got the opportunity to do something we’d wanted to do for a long time – fill the north coast with mermaids! Well, maybe not exactly fill it.
But the idea that we could create myth in the present on our beautiful coastline was something we and Tourism Ireland https://www.tourismireland.com/couldn’t resist.
Tourism Ireland arranged a camera crew and budget for performers. We put a call out for mermaids.
350 applications later (!) we had our mermaids – some pretty hardcore warrior women of the sea, and the plan was set for 3 days of dawn and dusk shoots. We teamed up with Billy from Speedmotion Films?http://speedmotion.co.uk and were guided along the coast by the expert Richard at Aquaholics.http://aquaholics.co.uk
The footage was used across digital media platforms and to publicise the 2018 launch of The Supercup NI.
Mermaids are all along the North Coast. If you look and listen closely, sometimes you can hear them playing out there, in the silver grey-green sea.
Our mermaid stories aren’t finished just yet….
